Whitening Pros & Cons
Pros:
The advantages of tooth whitening are that people usually elect such procedures to improve their overall appearance and boost their self confidence. Many people feel that bright smiles are beautiful and associated with a healthy lifestyle. Usually people smile more often when they have a white smile! Additionally, those with a brighter smile tend have a more minimal appearance of facial wrinkles, providing a younger appearance. Lastly, a brighter and whiter smile engages those who are listening while you speak and can actually make you more approachable.
Cons:
There can be short term disadvantages to teeth whitening and bleaching that include: sore gums or teeth sensitivity from the bleaching agent. The discomfort goes away when you discontinue use of the bleach but at times can stay for 1-2 days after bleaching or whitening. Some people are more sensitive to the bleaching or whitening agents but your dentist can test you for sensitivity before providing a recommendation.
Research shows that tooth bleaching or whitening is highly effective in more than 78% of patients. If you have severe tooth staining or discoloration, bleaching may not be the best choice. Veneers or crowns may be the best solution if staining is severe and you are extremely sensitive to the chemicals used to whiten your teeth. However, whitening or bleaching is usually the first attempt before veneers or crowns because it costs less and is successful on most individuals.
